Does running uphill burn more calories then running on flat land?

Runner’s Question: If you set the elevation on your treadmill higher, or run up hills in the neighborhood, will it burn more calories than just running on flat ground?
Is it a better work out to just run up elevated land? (Like if you would set your treadmill to a high elevation)
Thanks!

Yes. Don’t you notice you sweat more if you run uphill? Lol… If something seems to require more physical effort on your part, chances are you’re burning calories.
uphill work outs are best since that is when you burn most calories.
Yes, it does burn more calories if you run uphill or on an incline.
Yes you will burn a lot more calories. It will also tone and tighten you more. Have fun with this!
Although you would definitely burn more calories running uphill, it would not be better to just run uphill. Your training needs to reflect the physiological demands of the activity – so while training your body to be able to do the uphills is great, you will end up losing performance on the long straights since the movement is different enough between the two.
Hope that helps! Be sure to train smarter and not just for greater calorie output and you will be running for many years to come

how’s about that: if i run a 10k course – 5k up and 5k down. Is this physically the same as running 10k on flat ground?
thnks.
r.
Has anyone answered this part of the question? Up five, down five…is it the same as ten flat?
No, I think there’s a difference. As said before, if you run on an incline, you’re burning more calories than you would be if you were running on flat ground.
absolutely, you’re burning more calories! Uphill running is also great for toning the gluts and hams as well. But like any high intensity activity, uphill runs are best as part of an interval workout. Run uphill for a minute, then on flat ground as a recovery, and repeat as desired. High intensity training (HIIT) torches calories like no other!
This is quite a hot info. I’ll share it on Digg.
Great Post Thanx.
Obviously going uphill for, say 100 meters, would be a better workout than going flat or the same distance. However one would run out of gas going up hill faster so you wouldn’t be able to go the same distance.
Is there a rule of thumb for an equivalent workout of x units uphill compared with y units on a flat surface?
Is flat better for weight loss vs given that you would be able to take more steps although uphill would likely provide other qualitative strenghthing or cardiovascualar benefits?
